St Mary's has developed a whole -school approach to Special Educational Needs. We aim to meet the full range of individual needs within the curriculum. Everyone is involved: staff, children, governors and parents.

KEY STAGE 3:

Pupils who have special learning needs can be in any class depending on their specific support requirements. Broadly, there are three ability bands and the lower band has fewer pupils allowing closer support and intervention. All groups follow the broad and balanced National Curriculum. Years 10 and 11 follow GCSE courses

KEY STAGE 4:

Work is differentiated for pupils allowing all access to KS4 courses. If necessary, pupils are guided into appropriate options subjects supporting needs according to the individuals requirements.

AGENCIES INVOLVED WITH PUPILS IN OUR SCHOOL INCLUDE:

  • Educational Psychologist
  • School Nurse
  • Social Services
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services
  • Speech and Language Service

Nurture:

Nurture offers pupils a safe and friendly environment where they can spend their breaks. Although primarily aimed at pupils eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant or SEND youngsters, we welcome all pupils from each year group. The mix of age groups and abilities has resulted in good friendships being formed across school.

Rated highly by Ofsted in their last visit, it continues to grow in popularity. Nurture is supervised but maintains its homely and relaxed feel. Pupils become close and supportive with each other and develop positive relationships with TAs that are present each day.

To sum up the ethos of nurture:

"NURTURE IS A LOVELY PLACE TO BE" AND IS SAID TO BE “A PUPIL CENTRED ENVIRONMENT”
